The Justice Department announced Friday afternoon that under the Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS, about $45 million would be used this year to put 356 additional armed guards in schools across the country, for a total of $125 million in grants to be dispersed over the next three years.

There is no armed security at the elementary schools and current protocol dictates that if there were an incident at one of the grade schools, whoever is closer – the school resource officers or the police department’s patrol units – would respond.
