Rod Ryan, president of Storm Mountain, demonstrates the proper way to do a handgun press check. A press check is most commonly used at the firing range to make sure you have a round loaded in the chamber. It’s also good to do before heading out with your concealed or open carry firearm.
“If you get a click rather than a bang on the range, we’re going to penalize you.” Says Mr. Ryan. “If you get a click rather than a bang out on the street, there’s a good chance you could get hurt.”
Mr. Ryan also explains why it’s important to extend out to the threat after a press check to develop a good habit of pushing out from the high ready position.
Mr. Ryan spent more than 20 years combined, active and reserve, in the U.S. military as well as law enforcement. In 1996, he opened Storm Mountain near Keyser, West Virginia. It has grown into a world-renowned training facility for military, law enforcement, counter-terrorism personnel and civilians.
