Watch dog sues ATF over abandoned ‘green tip’ ammunition ban

Conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch filed suit against the federal government Monday for communications records over ammunition it attempted to ban in 2015.

The group says it requested the documents in March 2015 through the Freedom of Information Act after the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives announced it would reclassify “green tip” 5.56mm ammunition as “armor piercing,” thus removing its long held exemption for “sporting purposes.”

The ATF, court documents allege, ignored the group’s request completely.

“This is yet another example of how Obama’s wanton use of the ‘pen and the phone’ attempted to undermine the constitutional rights of all Americans, as opposed to upholding the rule of law,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “The Obama ATF simply ignored our request on their ammo ban. Let’s hope the Trump administration finally brings transparency to this out-of-control agency.”

The ATF initially announced this decision in February 2015, but after gathering more than 300,000 public comments against the reclassification, the agency reversed course.
