USA -(AmmoLand.com)- When it comes to guns and cars, there is a lot of misinformation.

Not surprisingly, because most of us do not have the luxury of shooting our daily driver to see how effective it is for cover, concealment or if our rounds will breach it. Luckily there are a number of courses that specialize in this type of shooting.

One of the best that we have seen is offered by William Petty at 88 Tactical Group and we recently previewed one of his subscription videos: “Vehicle CQB with William Petty.”

Petty began his Law Enforcement career in 2003 in Albuquerque, NM. While there he served as a Firearms Instructor, an Emergency Response Team member and was a member of the department’s shooting team. In 2011, he relocated to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates where he worked as a Counter Terrorism Instructor with the Critical National Infrastructure Authority.

Now we know what you’re thinking, “It’s just a video.”

However, this video contains the highlights of one of Petty’s 3-day vehicle cqb courses. It is definitely not a substitute for the real thing, but it points out what works, what doesn’t and interesting approaches to shooting as well as using parts of a vehicle for cover.

This training is not just the realm of an LEO or a “personal protection specialist”, but if you carry a firearm daily it will enlighten you to aspects of the role of your vehicle in a dynamic shooting situation.

When most of us are not home or working, we are typically driving to or from one of those locations. The video is a virtual ride-along or audit of the course and has some solid takeaways should you opt to pay for the full download.

At one time we always felt the safest place for cover behind a vehicle was behind a tire or engine block. We were very surprised with the results of the live ballistics. Some rounds that we would have thought would penetrate both sides of a car body didn’t do anything and ones that we completely dismissed ended up being a better performer than we considered.

There is more to it than just watching Petty and his students shoot up a few cars and trucks.

Petty goes through realistic shooting positions for shooting around cover as well as safe egress from a vehicle while armed. Not surprisingly, orientation of the weapon is very similar to the way we were trained to deploy from an Amtrak many years ago.

These are things we sometimes took for granted, but after careful viewing and a little practice we feel we are better prepared if we find ourselves in that situation.

Best of all is Petty’s scientific approach to ballistics in reference to an automobile. You might think a 115 grain bullet will do one thing, when in reality even a Toyota Prius can withstand impacts of as much as 28 million grains.
