Austin, TX -(AmmoLand.com)- The Texas State Rifle Association (TSRA), the state’s largest firearms and shooting sports organization, announces it has renewed its sponsorship of the Texas Youth Education Summit (Y.E.S.), a National Rifle Association (NRA) program which is made possible by funds raised through Friends of NRA events across the State of Texas and awarded in grants from the NRA Foundation.
The program helps introduce high school students to state government, civics, and the roles voters play in the process.
“For our nation to remain strong, it’s vitally important that our youth understand our state history and how government works, so we are very pleased to support the Y.E.S. program now for the fourth consecutive year,” says Doug DuBois Jr., executive director for the Texas State Rifle Association. “Since its inception, including 2016, more than 50 Texas youth will have completed this amazing NRA program, and the TSRA looks forward to many more opportunities to grow the program and enlighten more Texas youth to the unique richness of Texas history, heritage, government and success of our great state as well as instill in them a love for the Constitution, Second Amendment and how young citizens can become involved in serving their communities.”
The State Youth Education Summit (Y.E.S.) program began in 2002, in conjunction with National Y.E.S. Its purpose is to introduce high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors to their state government and the roles future generations of voters will play. (Texas Y.E.S. allows for sophomores and juniors.) A special emphasis is also placed on the benefits of firearms ownership. Other topics covered are state history, citizenship, speech and debate. Students from states hosting State Y.E.S. program must attend the state program before attending National. In the Texas Y.E.S. program; one student from each region is selected to represent their region at National Y.E.S. based on their application (includes GPA, community activities, etc.), essay, speech, debate and program participation. The program is facilitated by volunteers with guidance and oversight by NRA Field Representatives from each region.
