The departmental issued rifle belonging to the Highland Park police chief was stolen from the chief’s vehicle while parked outside of a Detroit church Sunday morning, The Detroit News reports.

Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody said investigators believe that suspects broke into Chief Kevin Coney’s vehicle, a 2006 Cadillac Escalade, while he was inside the Real Spirit Tabernacle church between 11:30 am and 2:45 pm Sunday.

The chief realized immediately that his vehicle was broken into while leaving the church because “the window was busted out,” The Saginaw News reports.

“We have an active investigation,” Woody said. “We do have some tips we are going after. I am confident that we will get that weapon back and off the streets.”

Woody told reporters that it appears the only item taken was the AR-15 rifle with a 30-round magazine.
