‘The View’ weighs in on 2nd Amendment, self-defense, militias and more (VIDEO)

With a high-profile shooting involving Republican lawmakers this week, the coffee gossip show went full speed ahead at the conversation on gun rights.

Host Whoopi Goldberg started the conversation speaking to the unrealistic nature that if those attending the event — a practice for a charity baseball game — had they been armed, would have been able to defend themselves.

“If you are playing softball, you are not wearing your gun,” said Goldberg. “So, what are you going to do?”

Answering Joy Behar’s point that the gunman may have been using an SKS semi-auto rifle that can fire “up to 40 rounds per minute” Goldberg chimed in with the assertion that “when it hit the ground, it kept firing — that’s what they do.”

The conversation turned to how the assailant was able to get his gun legally in Illinois with Joy Behar, a New York City resident, saying she would be afraid to live in an area with looser gun laws.

“I’d be afraid that some guy on the subway would have a fit, just go mad because he was upset somebody took his seat and shoot somebody else,” said Behar, without acknowledging that gun violence in and around the Big Apple’s subway network is an often very real thing even with strict gun laws.

Jedediah Bila, proclaiming her conservative creds, waded into the conversation after the talk turned to placing the burden of one’s self-defense on law enforcement, such as the now critically injured Rep. Steve Scalise did with his Capitol Police escort.

“If you live in a society where only police have guns, that’s called a police state,” said Bila. “That is not the United States of America.”

This brought Goldberg back around to make her point that the right to bear arms was “Because the Second Amendment is about a militia. That’s what it says,” to which host Sunny Hostin, followed up with, “Not to protect yourself and your family that’s not what the Second Amendment is about.”

Can we bring Kurt Russell back to the show to drop the knowledge on the constitutional gun rights? In the below, back in 2015, he explained to Goldberg and company that the Second Amendment was not about duck hunting.

“I think there is a very strong reason the Founding Fathers had for the Second Amendment, and that is that no government – no government ever – hasn’t had to fight its own people, and its own people hasn’t had to fight its own government,” said Russell.

“We had our Civil War,” he continued. “If that Second Amendment hadn’t been there, those people would not have had the opportunity to do what they consider was defending their life, their way, their style of living. So I agree with that. It’s a basic part of our existence and it’s basically that simple.”
