A Texas gas station clerk who just happened to be well-versed in MMA fighting sent a couple of would-be robbers running for their car earlier this month.

Mayura Dissanayake works at a Fuel Depot in Houston, but he also moonlights as a semi-professional mixed martial arts fighter. When several robbers ganged up on a fellow employee who had just returned from the bank, Dissanayake was quick to rush into the fray and put his years of training to good use, KPRC reports.

Dissanayake, a five-time MMA national champion in his home country of Sri Lanka, was behind the counter when he noticed two men step out of an SUV and attack his co-worker. The men tried to grab the co-worker’s bank bag, but Dissanayake was out the door and throwing punches before they knew what happened.

“Just the reaction, you see someone get beat up, you just go out,” Dissaanyake said. “The first guy I saw I just kicked him in the face. Then I punched the other guy.”

Dissanayake knocked suspect Odell Mathis, 33, to the ground and sent the other suspect running for his getaway vehicle. Mathis tried to get up and join his accomplice, but Dissanayake made sure he was down for the count.

“I just kicked him until he lays down on the floor,” Dissanayake said. “Until he stopped moving because I wasn’t’ sure if he had a knife or a gun so I wanted him to stop moving.”

While the driver and the accomplice got away, Mathis was arrested and charged with robbery and bodily injury.
