Take a look inside the ATF’s ‘top-secret’ gun vaults (VIDEO)

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Detroit Field Division is home to four vaults loaded with thousands of firearms.

The weapons inside the vaults were seized as part of various criminal investigations and will remain stored behind locked doors as evidence until the cases are resolved, the ABC-affiliate reports.

While there are rows upon rows of AR-15s and other long guns, the majority of firearms within the vaults are handguns. But all the weapons are catalogued and entered into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network.

“It’s vital, because you might have a firearm, you have a homicide victim – you may have the firearm and you may have that particular case solved,” said ATF Special Agent Donald Dawkins. “But if you get that firearm and trace it, it may lead to another homicide, it may lead to an armed robbery.”

According to ATF data, there were 4,360 firearms recovered from Michigan in 2012, and half of those were found in Detroit.
