Suspect dead, accomplices jailed after botched home invasion

An attempted home invasion robbery in Lexington, Indiana, over the weekend left one man dead and his two accomplices behind bars.

Police say they received two 911 calls in the early morning hours Saturday about a home invasion and subsequent shooting. When officers arrived, they found Scott Mitchell, 45, on the floor of the home with a gunshot wound to his chest. The county coroner pronounced him dead at the scene.

Two more suspects, 32-year-old Jessica Smith and her husband, 39-year-old Lonnie Smith, were also found inside the home, though unharmed. Both were arrested and charged with robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, with additional charges likely. They are each currently held on a $75,000 cash bond.

Neighbor Ed Ricketts said he awakened Saturday morning to the streets full of police cars. He also said it’s not the first break-in the neighborhood has experienced.

“I said, ‘Well, one of these days, there will be a killing,’” Ricketts said. “And that’s what happened.”
