Pierre, SD -(Ammoland.com)- Gov. Dennis Daugaard invites families to camp out on the capitol lawn as part of the state’s first Capital Campout.

The free event, to be held June 10-12, encourages families to spend the weekend learning outdoor skills and tent camping on the front lawn of the state capitol in Pierre.

“We are fortunate to live in a state with an abundance of outdoor opportunities. With 56 state parks and recreation areas spread across the state, some South Dakotans might not know where to begin,” said Gov. Daugaard. “This family event will showcase some of the opportunities South Dakota has to offer.”

Families will participate in several activities throughout the weekend, from nature programs to making s’mores. On Saturday, June 11, campers will take part in Outdoor University, where they can try a variety of outdoor activities, including kayaking, canoeing, fishing, rock climbing, shooting, archery and more. Outdoor University will be open to non-campers as well, and runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. CDT around Capitol Lake.

Gov. Daugaard especially encourages families new to camping and the outdoors to attend. Some loaner tents and sleeping bags will be available for families without equipment. Staff will also be available to assist setting up a campsite and several meals will be provided.

“Capital Campout is a no-cost, worry-free way to equip families with the skills needed to enjoy outdoor recreation opportunities,” said Gov. Daugaard.

Capital Campouts are planned in 11 states to celebrate June as Great Outdoors Month. The events are coordinated nationally by the American Recreation Coalition, and supported by founding sponsor Coleman as well as numerous national and local entities. The Game, Fish and Parks is taking the lead on organizing the South Dakota event.
