A woman accused of opening fire at YouTube headquarters in central California on Tuesday died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, local authorities said.
San Bruno Police Chief Ed Barberini told reporters at an afternoon press conference the unidentified female shot at least three employees before turning the gun on herself. Four people in total were transported to local hospitals with injuries, he said.
Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai released a statement Tuesday evening calling the incident an “unimaginable tragedy.”
“The best information we have is that the situation is contained,” Pichai said. “We are actively monitoring and working with local hospitals and authorities. It is with great sadness that I tell you — based on the latest information — four people were injured in this horrific act of violence. We are doing everything we can to support them and their families at this time.”
YouTube employs about 1,700 in the central California town about 12 miles south of San Francisco.
Todd Sherman, a producer at YouTube, detailed the incident as it began unfolding shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday via his Twitter account.
He said the confusion only escalated after the meeting abruptly ended. “We still didn’t know what was going on, but more people were running,” he said. “Seemed serious and not like a drill.”
President Donald Trump tweeted his sympathies to the victims and their families hours after news of the shooting broke.
The California chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America released a statement Tuesday evening blasting the nation’s gun laws.
“Our hearts go out to the employees of the YouTube headquarters in San Bruno and their families,” said Ellen Ginsberg, the local San Francisco group leader. “Once again, our country is shaken by a shooting – this one in a place of work. We cannot accept shootings at workplaces, schools, churches, movie theaters and elsewhere in our communities as the norm, and we cannot accept that 96 people die from gun violence every day in our country. Our elected leaders must do more to prevent these senseless acts of gun violence.”
