Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., walked on stage with a rifle.

Reminiscent of Charlton Heston during his “cold, dead hands” speech, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) walked on stage at the Conservative Political Action Conference raising an olden long gun in the air. He presented it as a gift to Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn, who is retiring early for health reasons, ABC News reports.

The rifle was a “Courage Under Fire” Lifetime Achievement award from the NRA and as McConnell thanked Coburn for his “distinguished service” as he passed the rifle along.

McConnel faces his toughest re-election bid yet and suggested during his speech that Republicans could regain control of the Senate. He also promised that if he was “given the opportunity to lead the U.S. Senate next year, I won’t let you down.”
