Secret Service performs live-fire near White House to calibrate shot spotter.

The U.S. Secret Service announced last week they would take advantage of President Trump’s weekend trip to Camp David to use a series of gunshots to test for vulnerabilities.

The public notice said a number of streets around the White House and Naval Observatory, where Vice President Pence resides, would be closed off so that they could fire multiple rounds from various weapons to help calibrate “shot spotter” style systems.

As explained by the federal agency tasked with protecting the executive branch, the exercise would calibrate a “system that provides real time detection and geolocation of gunshots fired within proximity of protected sites.”

The rounds would be fired in three shot strings into validated bullet traps “which will create a multiple gunshot event” across Saturday night into early Sunday morning.

An unnamed law enforcement source told CNN about 80 rounds would be fired.

President Trump and his family were away from Washington at Camp David.
