RoboCops may no longer be just a thing movies are made of. Students at the Florida International University have created their own version of the cybernetic cop called the TeleBot, and while they’re not quite ready to replace entire police departments, they may be able to handle simple tasks like handing out parking tickets.
The robots are operated by remote control systems and are equipped with sensors and cameras, giving the remote operator the ability to “patrol” from any location. Additionally, the robots have an “emotive display” which enables them to express simple emotions while interacting with the community.
While the robotic cops, which cost around $20,000 each, may seem like an unlikely entity to join a police force, Jeremy Robins, who is funding the project, said the TeleBots can give disabled military and police veterans a chance to serve where they otherwise wouldn’t be able.
“With TeleBots, a disabled police officer will be capable of performing many, if not most, of the functions of a normal patrol officer – interacting with the community, patrolling, responding to 911 calls, issuing citations,” Robins explained.
