Read judge’s opinion: No rights violated when officers detain open carry advocates

While walking down the street carrying a legally owned and holstered handgun, Johann Deffert was stopped by police in Grand Rapids, who were responding to a 911 call about a “suspicious person.”

In the end, after Deffert had been detained, officers determined no laws had been broken and he was free to go, but the encounter left Deffert filing a federal lawsuit over what he believed was a violation of his constitutional rights. Earlier this month, a judge sided with the police officers.
