A man was shot to death after he broke into a Portland home early Sunday morning.
A press release from the Portland Police Bureau states the 33-year-old female homeowner came home just before 2 a.m. She was with her children, who are 5 and 10 years old. After entering the home, the woman found the male suspect in her child’s bedroom. The homeowner was armed with a handgun and opened fire on the intruder. She then placed a call to the police.
When officers arrived, they discovered the male suspect still inside the home. Authorities pronounced him dead at the scene. Neither the mother nor her children suffered injuries.
At this point, the suspect has only been identified as a 59-year-old male. His name has not yet been released, pending notification of the next of kin. An autopsy was due to be performed Monday.
There was no indication the homeowner and the suspect knew each other. Authorities did not say why they believed the man broke into the home or what he was doing in the child’s bedroom.
The incident remains under investigation. Once the investigation is completed, the case will go to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office for review. The homeowner is not facing charges at this time and is said to be fully cooperating with authorities.
Neighborhood residents told reporters they were shocked to learn about the incident. However, most indicated the mother’s response was appropriate.
Just last week another Portland homeowner shot a man who was trying to break into his home through a window. That suspect’s injuries were believed to be non-life threatening. And as it turned out, the suspect was ex-NFL player Stanley Wilson, who formerly played for the Detroit Lions. Responding officers found Wilson completely naked, sitting in a fountain in the back yard. He was charged with burglary, trespassing and other related charges.
