Whereas the White House has long referred to the amalgam of terror groups in Syria and Iraq as ISIL (for Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant), the military is now using the term “Da’ish” or “Daesh” in a video released today.

The bomb camera footage, of U.S. and coalition forces aircraft destroying a reported 283 oil tankers near Al Hassakah and Dayr Az Zawr, Syria, on Nov. 22, 2015, by Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF–OIR) headquarters, uses the term Da’ish in the video comments and runs the term Daesh in the video’s cover page. This is a change from footage released last week where they still carried the ISIL designation.

While technically a correct acronym for the group’s formal name Arabic name (al-Dawlah al-Islamīyah fī al-ʻIrāq wa-al-Shām) the organization considers Da’ish derogatory because without the appropriate conjugation it sounds similar to the Arabic words Daes, which means “one who crushes something underfoot,” and Dahes, “one who sows discord.”

In other words, ISIS get’s their feelings hurt when you call them Da’ish/Daesh. Poor fellas.

Good job, CJTF-OIR.

Now if they can just save a few trees by stopping leaflet drops 45 minutes before these bombing runs and arrange some Daesh to experience rapid and immediate vaporization, we’d really be talking.
