Paralyzed Portland cop stands to accept promotion (VIDEO)

With the aid of a device called ReWalk, a Portland police officer who has been paralyzed from the waist down for nearly five years stood up during a ceremony last week to accept a promotion to sergeant.

“I stood up and took the oath,” said Paul Meyer. “To be able to do that again means so much to me. It’s unbelievable.’’

Meyer, 47, was left paralyzed from an accident during an ATV training drill on Nov. 19, 2012. During the exercise, a 110-foot free broke and fell on Meyer, cracking his helmet and delivering a life-changing blow to his head and back.

About nine months after the accident, Meyer, who was confined to a wheelchair, returned to the department to work part time in the armory where he repaired firearms, researched police training practices, and wrote educational materials. Then, about a year and a half later, Meyer went back to full time in the training division.

As part of his promotion to sergeant, Meyer is now headed to the Professional Standards Division where he will be in charge of the Employee Information System to monitor excessive force complaints.
