The armed civilian group known as the Oath Keepers is calling on its membership to report voter fraud and intimidation on Election Day.
A call to action was posted on the group’s website Tuesday telling followers they had a responsibility to ensure the election process is not stolen from the United States of America.
“Without a clean election, the Republic is dead, and there is no hope of resurrecting it through conventional, peaceful, political means,” the bulletin reads.
The call to action comes as Republican nominee Donald Trump insists the election is rigged against him, and telling his followers to watch out for voter fraud at the polls. Yet, claims of large scale voter fraud have been largely debunked and political leaders on both sides of the aisle have assured voters the system is not rigged.
Still, Tuesday’s Oath Keepers post notes a video series by Project Veritas, a political activist news group, in which Democratic political operatives talked about ways to commit voter fraud. “We’ve been busing people in to deal with you fucking assholes for 50 years, and we’re not going to stop now,” says Scott Foval in one of the videos.
Foval worked for Americans United for Change, but was laid off after the videos were released. Another Democratic operative seen in the videos also left his job in the wake of the video release.
A firm implicated in the video series, Democracy Partners, denounced the videos released by Project Veritas. “Our firm has recently been the victim of a well-funded, systematic spy operation,” reads a Democracy Partners statement. “The plot involved the use of trained operatives using false identifications, disguises and elaborate false covers to infiltrate our firm and others, to steal campaign plans, and goad unsuspecting individuals into making careless statements on hidden cameras.”
The Oath Keepers call to action tells followers not to wear Oath Keepers gear to the polling place, to blend in, and to encourage family to participate in voter fraud prevention efforts. It also outlines ways to legally spot and document election fraud.
“Our significant capabilities in conducting covert operations, intelligence gathering, and investigation can and should be leveraged to counter actions of any political party or criminal gang that attempts to disenfranchise the citizens of our nation,” says the Oath Keepers post.
Attorney General Loretta Lynch launched an initiative on Oct. 19 to combat Election Day fraud and advanced efforts to prevent voter intimidation at the polls. As with every election year, the Justice Department will send hundreds of representatives to monitor the voting process.
Clarification: A previous version of this story referred to the Oath Keepers as an anti-government militia group. While inaccurate, the designation is put on the heavily-armed group by organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center.
