NWTF Supports Recovering America’s Wildlife Act

EDGEFIELD, S.C. -(Ammoland.com)- The National Wild Turkey Federation strongly supports the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act and thanks representatives Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE) and Debbie Dingell (D-MI) for introducing this important piece of legislation.

“Our wild places and wild animals are at a crossroad. For more than 75 years, outdoorsmen and women have shouldered the burden of paying for conservation efforts, but that funding source is no longer adequate,” NWTF CEO Becky Humphries said. “With the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act, all Americans will become vested in conservation, as the proposed legislation funds conservation of the species with the greatest needs now to keep them from being listed under the Endangered Species Act in the future.”

The act does not require taxpayers or businesses to pay more taxes; it will redirect $1.3 billion annually in existing royalties from the development of energy and mineral resources on federal lands and waters to the Wildlife Conservation Restoration Program to conserve a full array of fish and wildlife.

The NWTF is grateful to see a solution to conservation funding on this scale. The current conservation funding model only funds a small portion of what states need to conserve the species of greatest need.

About the National Wild Turkey Federation:

When the National Wild Turkey Federation was founded in 1973, there were about 1.3 million wild turkeys in North America. After decades of work, that number hit a historic high of almost 7 million turkeys. To succeed, the NWTF stood behind science-based conservation and hunters’ rights. Today, the NWTF is focused on the future of hunting and conservation through its Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. initiative – a charge that mobilizes science, fundraising and devoted volunteers to conserve or enhance more than 4 million acres of essential wildlife habitat, recruit at least 1.5 million hunters and open access to 500,000 acres for hunting.
