NSSF, Cabela’s partner to expand program fighting straw purchases

The National Shooting Sports Foundation has paired with Cabela’s Inc. to increase awareness of the “Don’t Lie for the Other Guy” program for preventing the illegal straw purchase of firearms in more than 60 of the outdoor giant’s stores.

“Don’t Lie” was created more than 12 years ago as a cooperative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the NSSF to help educate federal firearms licensees to better identify potential straw purchasers and raise awareness about the seriousness of the crime of buying a gun for someone who cannot legally do so.

Although Cabela’s stores already utilize and display the “Don’t Lie” video and printed advertisements, this fall it will implement additional materials, specifically mouse pads and an educational card, at all of its 250 computer kiosks where customers electronically complete the ATF background check form.

The messaging on program materials explains that anyone attempting an illegal firearm purchase faces federal felony penalty of up to 10 years in jail or up to $250,000 in fines.
