No plea deal for wife of former Bell Gardens mayor; Case headed to trial (VIDEO)

Lyvette Crespo, who was charged with manslaughter after fatally shooting her husband, former Bell Gardens mayor Daniel Crepso, during a violent domestic dispute two years ago, will face a jury, the court decided this week.

“We thought we had a deal – at some point we had a plea agreement, that had to be approved by supervisors. And it didn’t work out,” said Lyvette Crespo’s attorney, Eber Bayona.

The plea deal would have kept Crespo out of prison, while serving five years of probation. But Daniel’s brother, William, was against the deal, as he wants to see Lyvette serve prison time. It’s unknown why Crespo did not take the deal, but her case will now go to a jury trial, which is set to begin in January.

Crespo, who endured nearly three decades of abuse at the hands of her husband, maintains she acted in self-defense during a heated argument that stemmed partially from her husband’s numerous and ongoing infidelities.

Crespo, who was assaulted during the altercation, shot her husband after he struck their son, who along with his sister, continues to defend his mother’s actions. Prosecutors argue that Crespo didn’t act out of fear for her or her son’s life, but rather out of retaliation for her husband’s unfaithful acts.
