NICS, now working, had technical issues three days in a row

The National Instant Criminal Background Check system for gun purchases was down this morning, for the third day in a row, due to technical issues.

“The build that was put in affects the databases we have to search to complete the background check.  So when they are having an issue we have to take our system down too and cannot conduct any background checks,” said Kimberly Brown, NICS federal firearms license liaison.

While Brown said the system is up and running as of 12:45 pm eastern, it shutdown both NICS and NICS E-Check this morning. The outage was reported about 9:30 am this morning.

NICS was also down for about 30 minutes to an hour yesterday morning, and a few hours Sunday morning as well.

The source of yesterday’s problem was also due to the system upgrade implemented to one of the agency’s databases over the weekend, the FBI said.

“(The upgrade) did cause some issues (Sunday) and the NICS was out of service for a few hours (Sunday) morning. Some issues persist with one of the databases that the NICS relies upon to conduct background checks,” said FBI spokeswoman Jill Montgomery via email yesterday.
