Newtown: Gun Control Ground Zero (VIDEO)

Newtown, Connecticut. A picturesque New England town with a population of 28,000 people, an average family income of over $100,000 and almost no crime.

But three years ago, on Dec. 14, 2012, a young man suffering from severe mental issues, murdered his single mother in this house in an upscale district of Newtown using her unlocked firearms.

He then drove less than five miles to the Sandy Hook Elementary School, now since demolished, where he committed the second worst school shooting in U.S. history. His primary weapon was a Bushmaster AR-15 rifle.

Bushmaster, along with countless other firearm, ammunition and related companies are represented in the U.S. by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. Its mission is to promote, protect and preserve hunting and the shooting sports. They have been located for the last 25 years in this nondescript building less than three miles from Sandy Hook.

Up until the shooting, the NSSF had attracted little to no attention in Newtown. That was about to change.

Guns.com takes an in-depth look at how this horrific incident changed the debate of gun control in the picturesque town of Newtown, home to the NSSF – one of the largest gun lobbies in the country.
