A rare New Haven Arms Company Henry rifle that once served in the 3rd US Veteran Volunteer Infantry in 1865 will soon be up for grabs from Rock Island Auction.
Rock Island Auction recently released the upcoming sale’s catalogue detailing all the goodies that will soon be available to gun collectors. Selling June 22, the New Haven Arms Co. rifle is expected to garner the highest price from the catalogue sale, bringing in an estimated $18,000 to $27,500.
The Henry lever action rifle was manufactured by New Haven Arms Co. in December 1863 as part of an 800 gun Ordnance Department contract specifically aimed at arming the 1st District of Columbia Cavalry. Marked with serial number 3750, the rifle is believed to have been transferred to the 3rd US Veteran Volunteer Infantry in 1865 by way of the D.C. Calvary.
Many of the 800 1st D.C. Calvary Henry rifles were captured and used by Confederate soldiers.
The rifle has a 24-inch octagon barrel with integral 15-shot magazine. Chambered in 44 Henry RF, the long gun a blue finish topped off with a walnut stock. A brass bead front sight and a dovetail mounted, folding leaf, rear sight with 1,000 yard center notch sits atop the barrel.
Rock Island Auction says the rifle is in need of some minor replacement parts and sports light pitting in some places.
Rock Island Auction is prepared to accept sealed and phone bids for the Henry rifle until June 22.
