NC teacher defends desecrating flag during lesson on free speech (VIDEO)

A history teacher from Massey Hill Classical High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina, is having his employment reevaluated after he encouraged students to desecrate an American flag during a lesson on the First Amendment.

“I put the flag on the ground and I took two steps with my right foot and I said, ‘This is an example of free speech,’” Lee Francis explained.

Francis then invited students to come forward with scissors to cut the flag or help him set it on fire. At least two students were disgusted by the act though and immediately stood up and walked out. The students didn’t say a word or otherwise disrupt the class at all, Francis said. They just left. But another student approached Francis and took the flag from him.

Francis sees nothing wrong with the way he taught his lesson, but not all parents and faculty members would agree.

Melissa Ramos, whose daughter attends the school and son is in the military, said there are a number of other ways freedom of speech could have been demonstrated, and Superintendent Dr. Frank Till Jr. agreed.

“I think he’s right, absolutely there could be other ways to teach the subject, but in the same vein the way that I taught it can’t necessarily be wrong,” Francis said.

Francis was told not to come back to work over concerns of threats, but Till confirmed the incident is now under investigation, with the school district “reevaluating” Francis’ teaching position.
