The location scout for the Netflix original show “Narcos” was fatally shot while searching for locations in Mexico to film the show’s upcoming season.

Carlos Muñoz Portal, 37, was found shot to death inside his car Monday in Temascalapa, a rural town located about 40 miles north of Mexico City. Media reports describe his body as being riddled with bullets.

The shooting remains under investigation, although local authorities said there were no witnesses and indicated clues are scarce.

Netflix called Portal a “well-respected location scout” while expressing condolences to his family in a statement.

The show focuses on the rise and fall of drug cartels in the 1980s and 1990s. The show’s fourth season was set to be filmed in Mexico, a country that has been plagued with record-breaking violence, often fueled by drug cartels and gangs.
