The number of Americans who think having a gun in the home makes it safer has doubled since 2000, according to a new Gallup poll.
But three in 10 Americans say having a gun in the home makes it a more dangerous place.
For the survey, Gallup interviewed 1,017 registered voters from all 50 states and the District of Columbia over the phone.
The poll resulted in 63 percent of Americans saying a gun makes a home safer, 30 percent saying more dangerous and 6 percent saying it depends.
Of those surveyed, 42 percent said they keep a gun in the home, 53 percent said didn’t, and 4 percent had no opinion.
More specifically, 2 percent said they also kept a gun in the garage, barn, shed or vehicle, 52 percent said didn’t, and 4 percent had no opinion.
Americans who have a gun in their home are significantly more likely than others to say that having a gun makes a home safer, though one in 10 believe it makes a home more dangerous.
The majority of those who think guns in a home makes it safer are white, male and republican.
