More than 500 vintage Colt handguns up for grabs (PHOTOS)

Rock Island’s upcoming September Premiere Auction has several collections’ worth of vintage Colt revolvers including Squarebacks, a Walker and a factory shoulder stocked model.

The auction has well over 500 Colts, mostly revolvers, and spans the line from museum pieces and early rares to more affordable offerings for the collector eager to flesh out their wheel gun niche. Here are some of the more exciting specimins we saw:

The crown jewel is this set of Colt Model 1851 Navy style "Squareback" .36 caliber percussion revolvers, so named because of their distinctive squarebacked brass trigger guards. Estimated Price: $200,000 - $325,000, but hey, its a set.

Next up is this exhibition engraved Colt Model 1860 .44 caliber Army Revolver with its matching factory shoulder stock. While the 8-inch barrel is sweet, the stock is what sets the piece off and it has been documented as passing through some of the most estemmed firearms collections in history. One of Colt's earliest designs, this "D Company" Walker Model 1847 percussion revolver is a beast with its 9-inch partial octagon barrel and tips the scales at over 4-pounds. Just 220 of these guns were marked for D Company of the U.S. Mounted Rifles regiment as part of a 1,000 revolver run. Estimated Price: $125,000 - $175,000

This Colt Third Model Hartford London Dragoon is a heavy .44, and has seen some use over the years, but is still heavily decorated in gold damascene. With SN#529, it is one of just 700 made by Colt for sale in England between 1853 and 1857. Estimated Price: $30,000 - $45,000. This pair of Wolf & Klar Engraved Colt Single Action Army revolvers dates from 1924 and the pearl grips include a carved steer head with ruby red eyes on the right side. $14,000 - $22,500.
