Residents of an Oklahoma City suburb are in shock following a deadly attack at a food processing plant Thursday afternoon in which an employee beheaded one woman and stabbed another before the company’s CEO shot the man in an attempt to stop him.
Multiple media outlets reported that Alton Nolen, 30, was fired from his job at Vaughan Foods, Inc. and in the immediate aftermath he reportedly walked back into the business and attacked Colleen Hufford, 54, with a knife, stabbing her repeatedly and eventually severed her head. Nolen then turned his attention to Traci Johnson, 43, stabbing her multiple times. At that point, the company’s chief operating officer, Mark Vaughan, who is also a reserve sheriff’s deputy, shot Nolen.
The first call to 911 was for a report of a stabbing, but then calls started rolling in for what callers thought was an active shooter situation.
When officers arrived, Hufford was pronounced dead and Johnson and Nolen were transported to the hospital. Both are expected to survive and Nolen will face charges once released. After searching the facility, officers found no other victims and no other suspects are believed to be involved.
Sgt. Jeremy Lewis of the Moore Police Department confirmed that Nolen had recently converted to Islam and was apparently attempting to convert his coworkers. Lewis also said that due to the details surrounding the incident, the FBI will be assisting in the investigation.
Nolen, who was released from prison in March of last year, had a prior criminal history, which included multiple felony drug offenses, assault and battery on a police officer and escape from detention.
