A 51-year-old man was fatally shot while attempting to illegally sell firearms in Lincoln County, North Carolina, Saturday afternoon.

According to a press release from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, they received a call around 2:45 p.m. and when deputies arrived at the home from where the call originated, they found a man lying in the front yard. The man, later identified as Marion Palmer Yarborough, was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the investigation, authorities learned Yarborough, another man, and a woman came to the house trying to sell guns that were previously stolen in Gastonia. An argument ensued between the two male suspects and a male resident, with the suspects eventually forcing the resident on the floor at gunpoint.

It was then that a female resident emerged from a back bedroom and opened fire on the suspects, striking Yarborough. Once gunfire erupted, the second male suspect and the female suspect got into the car and drove away, leaving Yarborough behind.

No charges are expected to be filed against the female resident, as she acted in defense of another.
