“Girls” actress Lena Dunham gave a signal boost to producer Tami Sagher’s idea to peel off the guns held by Matt Damon in New York City subway posters for his upcoming film.
“Hey New Yorkers, what if we do some peeling & get rid of the guns in the Jason Bourne subway ads. So tired of guns,” wrote Sagher in an Instagram post which Dunham dutifully re-posted to her 2.7 million followers, although to be sure, news of mass movie poster vandalism across the Big Apple has not been forthcoming.
NYC-based gossip blog Gawker held the effort was fleeting and misplaced.
“For one thing, obviously, defacing posters in New York City subway stations will have a net zero effect on the world. If tearing down subway posters meant anything, Girls itself would not be on its fifth season,” wrote Jordan Sargent for the blog, going on to contend that “Matt Damon and Universal Pictures are not the real enemy here.”
Speaking of which, Damon himself came out on a trip to Australia waxing poetic for how strict gun laws are ‘down under before lamenting that, sadly, real change for gun control in the States is more ephemeral.
“People get so emotional that even when you make a suggestion about not selling AK47s to people on terror watchlists, that’s a non-starter. I don’t know what needs to happen,” said Damon.
According to the Internet Media Firearm Database, Damon has extensively used guns in character on film, appearing in over a dozen movies in which he slung everything from a Sharps 1874 as an Old West lawman in True Grit to a futuristic Kalash with air-burst ammo in Elysium– where he played something of a terrorist.
