Organizing for Action aims to fix the “broken background check system” and plans to remember the victims of by lighting candles and reciting each of their names.
This Dec. 14 will mark one year since the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting in Newtown that left 20 children and six educators dead. Organizing for Action, a non-profit that rallies support for President Obama’s policies, wants to use the anniversary as a platform to push more gun control laws.
“Supporters will be gathering at events in communities across the country, with partner organizations, to pay tribute to the 26 victims and call on Congress to finally take action to make our communities safer,” OFA states on its website.
Attendees of the events will be given “Remember Newtown” ribbons and hosts will walk around with sign-up sheets asking for email and physical addresses, as well as phone numbers.
This form is offered on the OFA website so others can host their own events.
The hosts will also “highlight the fact that Congress has failed to take action to expand background checks for gun sales – or do anything else to prevent gun violence.”
Social media will be used to further propagate their message, with the Twitter hashtags #WeAreNewtown and #OFAction already set up. The OFA has given hosts this guideline to help them figure out which photos to upload: “What’s going to look good in a photo that could explain the theme of this event?”
