Lawmaker shot during baseball game back in intensive care

Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., the third-ranking Republican in the House, says he rejects all forms of bigotry after his admission last week that he addressed a white supremacist group in 2002, as GOP leaders speak to reporters following a caucus meeting, at the Capitol in Washington, Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015. Though he has received support from both Republicans and Democrats on the Hill, Scalise, of Louisiana, faced fresh questions about his 2002 speech to a Louisiana convention of the European-American Unity and Rights Organization, which called itself EURO. The lawmaker who was seriously wounded when a gunman opened fire on a congressional baseball practice near the nation’s capital last month was readmitted to intensive care and remained in critical condition Wednesday night.

The MedStar Washington Hospital Center told the Associated Press that GOP House Majority Whip Steve Scalise had to be seen for infection of the wound he sustained.

Scalise and other members of Congress were practicing for charity baseball when the gunman opened fire, wounding several of them, Scalise the most severely.

The shooter, a home inspector from Illinois, was reportedly killed by Capitol Police, who returned fire.

Scalise was reportedly shot in the hip, the bullet tearing into his body. The AP reported that he had gone through several surgeries and was upgraded to fair condition before the worry of infection had set in.

A day after the shooting, a record number of spectators filled the stands of the baseball game, which pits Democrats against Republicans for charity.
