The lawmaker who was seriously wounded when a gunman opened fire on a congressional baseball practice near the nation’s capital last month was readmitted to intensive care and remained in critical condition Wednesday night.

The MedStar Washington Hospital Center told the Associated Press that GOP House Majority Whip Steve Scalise had to be seen for infection of the wound he sustained.

Scalise and other members of Congress were practicing for charity baseball when the gunman opened fire, wounding several of them, Scalise the most severely.

The shooter, a home inspector from Illinois, was reportedly killed by Capitol Police, who returned fire.

Scalise was reportedly shot in the hip, the bullet tearing into his body. The AP reported that he had gone through several surgeries and was upgraded to fair condition before the worry of infection had set in.

A day after the shooting, a record number of spectators filled the stands of the baseball game, which pits Democrats against Republicans for charity.
