While playing near a creek in Plainview, Illinois, Monday afternoon, some kids found what turned out to be human remains, and now authorities are looking into the possibility that the victim is a mentally challenged man who went missing nearly four years ago.
After making the discovery, the children notified their parents, who, in turn, called the police.
Authorities said when the body was first examined, it was so badly decomposed that the sex of the victim could not be determined. However, officials also said evidence at the crime scene suggested the victim did not die of natural causes and was, in fact, murdered.
The Major Case Squad is conducting the investigation and after pouring through records of missing persons, authorities believe the body may be that of Joseph Wilson, who was reported missing under suspicious circumstances in April 2012.
Although Wilson is 24 years old, according to reports from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, he has the mind of a 7-year-old and was unable to care for himself. Authorities said after Wilson disappeared, someone continued to cash his Social Security checks.
