K-9 dies of heat distress after lengthy pursuit

LRPD K-9 Officer Titus

Titus, a K-9 officer from the Little Rock Police Department died last week following the pursuit of a suspect who was accused of breaking into vehicles.

The chase began after officers attempted to place the suspect in custody before he fled, leading Titus and other officers on a lengthy foot pursuit while temperatures topped the upper 90s. The K-9 officer eventually apprehended the suspect, but soon thereafter began showing signs of heat-related distress.

Titus, who had been with the department for three years and had a hand in countless arrests, was taken to a local animal hospital, but attempts to revive him failed.

“Titus was loved by the community and his fellow officers, and will be deeply missed,” the department said in a statement.
