Inmates come to deputy’s aid after fellow inmate tries to choke him with a towel (VIDEO)

Authorities praised the actions of several inmates at the Falkenburg Road Jail in Tampa, Florida, after they came to the aid of a deputy who was being violently choked by another inmate last week, all of which was captured on surveillance video.

In the video, Kiondre Zachary, 22, is seen walking up behind Deputy D. Hernandez, 31, as Zachary quickly rolls a towel. Then, in one solid swing gets the towel around Hernandez’s neck before kicking him forward with one foot, nearly causing the deputy to lose his footing and fall backward.

About halfway through the video, the attack is seen more clearly from a camera at a different angle.

The two tussle for a moment, then several inmates intervene before additional officers respond to the disruption.

Zachary, who was originally held on burglary charges, now faces charges of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and was transferred to an isolation cell.

Hernandez suffered a twisted ankle, bruised knee and neck abrasions. He has been with the department for about 10 months.

“Due to the overall professionalism and respect that detention deputies display towards the inmates on a daily basis, the inmates came to the deputy’s aid preventing the deputy from being seriously injured,” officials said in a statement to local media.
