More than half a dozen inmates at the Parker County Jail in Weatherford, Texas, broke the rules and put their own lives at risk to help a jailer who apparently had a heart attack.
The inmates were all shackled and locked in a holding cell when they saw the jailer slump over and lose consciousness.
“He just fell over,” said inmate Nick Kelton. “Looked like an act. Could have died right there.”
The inmates quickly worked together to bust down the door of the holding cell to get to the jailer, who had no pulse at that point. The inmates then screamed for help. In fact, they made so much noise it grabbed the attention of the deputies in the courtroom downstairs.
“They thought it was a fight,” inmate Floyd Smith chimed in. “They thought we were taking over.”
Parker County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ryan Speegle said deputies weren’t sure what was happening at first and noted that the jailer did have a gun and the situation could have easily turned very bad. But while one of the inmates reached for the jailer’s radio in an attempt to call for help, none of them even tried to gain access to his weapon.
Kelton, a self-proclaimed meth addict facing his fourth prison sentence, shrugged off his actions, as if it was never a question whether or not to help the jailer. Smith, who ironically is in jail for assault on a public servant, echoed the same sentiment.
“He’s a good man,” Kelton said of the jailer.
Meanwhile, Capt. Mark Arnett said the inmates likely saved the man’s life.
“He could have been there 15 minutes before any other staff walked in and found him,” Arnett said.
The jailer, whose name was not released, is expected to make a full recovery and return to work soon.
