Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett has announced the implementation of a new Gun Tip Line he hopes will help to slow gun violence in the city.
WTHR 13 reported that Hogsett unveiled the new plan on Wednesday night during his State of the City address.
Hogsett urged people to use the anonymous tip line to report guns that have been obtained illegally, especially those in the hands of young people. Hogset indicated tips that lead to actual charges can result in rewards of up to $750.
“We must get guns out of the hands of our children and we get guns out of the hands of our young people,” Hogsett said.
Indianapolis Police Chief Bryan Roach also weighed in on the matter.
“We want to change the message,” Roach said. “Right now it seems cool to carry a gun. We want to influence others to understand that, the impact that those guns can have.”
The mayor also talked about programs intended to keep homeless people out jail and ensure that children of Indianapolis have access to a post-high school degree, license or certificate.
