A U.S. District Court in Idaho held a sentencing hearing July 22 for a convicted felon who is in the United States illegally and pleaded guilty to being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
Raul Valencia-Hernandez, 51, of Palmdale, California, was sentenced to 20 months in prison for his charges and was also ordered to forfeit his gun.
According to information presented at his sentencing hearing, on Oct. 15, 2013, police in Twin Falls, Idaho, received a call about suspicious drug activity at a Motel 6.
At the motel, authorities found Valencia-Hernandez with a loaded Ruger 9mm pistol, digital scale, methamphetamine pipes, plastic baggies with meth residue and a drug ledger.
Valencia-Hernandez is prohibited from possessing any firearm he is in the U.S. illegally and because he had previously been convicted of the felony offense of sale or transport of a controlled substance in California, the U.S. Attorney’s office said.
Valencia-Hernandez has lived in the U.S. for the past 34 years. After his stint in prison, he will be deported to Mexico.
