Two months after a man was found lying on a freeway with a gunshot wound, Houston police have a suspect in custody.

Authorities believe the March shooting stemmed from an altercation at a nearby motel between a trucker and the suspect. Police say Kevin Peoples, 29, fired at Alex Benson, 48, as Benson fled from the area in his 18-wheeler. Benson, although injured, managed to drive away in an attempt to get help.

Benson stopped in the middle of the freeway and climbed out of his truck, still seeking assistance, but 15 feet from an overpass onto the road below. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Peoples was arrested Thursday and charged with Benson’s death.

Authorities did not say what spawned the altercation.

A female who was with Peoples at the time of the shooting was questioned and released without charges.
