The legal team behind a number of ongoing challenges to California’s gun restrictions are hosting a free online webinar on the Golden State’s new gun laws.
The live one-hour event will be Tuesday, Jan.10 from 12-1 p.m. (PST) and is being conducted by the California Rifle and Pistol Association and National Rifle Association. Long Beach attorney Chuck Michel will be a featured speaker along with attorney Joseph Silvoso.
Over a dozen gun control bills were pushed through the state legislature in an express train conducted by Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León last summer with seven signed by Gov. Jerry Brown. Then came Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom’s “Safety for All” Proposition 63 voter referendum which, filed prior to the legislative push, largely duplicated several of the new pending laws while adding a mandate to require background checks prior to all ammunition sales.
The result is a complicated landscape of new legal definitions of just what an “assault weapon” is under California law with a myriad of new requirements for registration, how bullet buttons affect firearms and proposed rule changes by the state Department of Justice.
The webinar will address these, as well as future legal challenges to the new laws.
