The Secret Service rushed Donald Trump off the stage during a campaign rally Saturday in Reno after someone in the crowd shouted “gun.”
But, as it turns out, no weapon was found after agents conducted a thorough investigation, the agency told reporters. Trump was unharmed.
Following the incident, authorities escorted and detained a man identified as Austyn Crites from the crowd, but he was later released and no charges were filed, CNN reported.
The commotion started shortly after Crites raised a sign that read “Republicans Against Trump” and then was assaulted by a group of people.
“All of a sudden, because they couldn’t grab the sign, or whatever happened, bam, I get tackled by all these people who were just, like, kicking me and grabbing me in the crotch and just, just beating the crap out of me,” Crites said. “And somebody yells something about a gun, and so that’s when things really got out of hand.”
Immediately after the incident, Trump campaign officials tweeted about it. “Hillary (Clinton) ran away from rain today. Trump is back on stage minutes after assassination attempt,” wrote Dan Scavino, Jr., Trump’s social media director.
But once the investigation was completed, the Trump campaign released as statement thanking law enforcement.
“I would like to thank the United States Secret Service and the law enforcement resources in Reno and the state of Nevada for their fast and professional response,” Trump said. “I also want to thank the many thousands of people present for their unwavering and unbelievable support. Nothing will stop us — we will make America great again!”
