GenDyn wins $26.2 million machine gun contract by U.S. Navy

General Dynamics was awarded a $26.2 million contract to make machine gun by the Naval Sea Systems Command this week.

General Dynamics Land Systems will produce an unspecified number of modified MK46 weapons systems to fit Littoral combat ships and Zumwalt-class ships.

The MK46 Naval Weapon System uses a 30mm high velocity cannon, a forward looking infrared sensor, a low light television camera, and a laser rangefinder for shipboard self defense against small, high speed surface targets. Users operate it remotely.

Since 2005, General Dynamics has delivered 38 MK46 systems to the U.S. Navy.  It’s the main deck gun for LPD-17 ships and is the secondary gun battery for LCS, and Zumwalt-class ships.

Similarly, the U.S. Army awarded FN America $84.6 million, four-year contract for the M240 machine gun.

In 2013, General Dynamics reported roughly $31 billion in revenue and more than $2 billion in net income.

More recently, in November, the defense company partnered with Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation to enter the handgun competition by the U.S. Army with hopes of replacing the M9.
