Former NBA player shields kids during shooting

Brandon Roy

Brandon Roy, who formerly played as a guard for the Portland Trail Blazers, was shot over the weekend in Southern California while visiting his grandmother, but authorities say the injury occurred as he was shielding children from the gunfire.

Roy was outside of his grandmother’s home watching a group of kids play basketball when the suspects came near the home and started shooting. At the sound of gunfire, Roy sprang into selfless action and used his own body to shield the children from the gunfire. He was struck once in the leg, but none of the children were injured.

The suspects immediately fled from the scene and have not been identified or located. The shooting was characterized as a random act of violence.

Roy has since returned to his home state of Washington where he now coaches high school basketball. He is expected to recover.
