During a Homestead, Florida, police department’s recent move to a new building, a small, evidence tape-covered refrigerator containing human fetuses was discovered. The fetuses had apparently been there for several years and the find has raised concerns from the president of the Dade County Police Benevolent Association.
“We have irregularities at best, maybe criminal actions at worst. We want it exposed,” said PBA President John Rivera.
Rivera questioned why the fetuses were left in a refrigerator at the department rather than sent to the medical examiner’s office, but Detective Fernando Morales with the Homestead Police Department said they did nothing wrong and followed the proper protocol.
“This is not something preserved out of malice,” Morales explained.
The fetuses, which had been stored for at least a decade, were all part of evidence from sexual assault cases and according to the department’s standard operating procedure can be stored for up to 75 years.
