The Federal Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday released a video clip of a alleged terrorist propaganda video and is seeking the public’s help in identifying its subject.
The individual was masked, English-speaking, wearing a desert camouflage uniform and claimed to be a member of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, also widely known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
The clip, just over a minute, is part of a 55-minute video released Sept .19.
Authorities believe the man, who went seamlessly between North American English and Arabic, was attempting to appeal to a Western audience.
The FBI believes that about a dozen Americans are fighting in Syria with ISIL and this video is being used as a recruiting tool to increase those numbers.
“We’re hoping that someone might recognize this individual and provide us with key pieces of information,”said Michael Steinbach, assistant director of the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division. “No piece of information is too small.”
The speaker continued and behind him men dug in the ground. Later they stood over the shallow graves while the masked speaker put a gun to one man’s head as if to execute him.
According to the speaker, the men were Syrian soldiers who were “digging their own graves in the very place where they were stationed.”
He further claimed the soldiers were terrorizing the Muslims in Ar-Raqqah, Syria, where they were stationed.
“And behind them you can see the officers’ residence, filled with bullet holes and artillery shells from the Islamic State,” the man said.
It’s unclear if the video was shot in Ar Raqqah, but the U.S. did carry out airstrikes against ISIL targets in the area four days after the video was released.
“The flames of war are only beginning to intensify. … The fighting has just begun.”
The video is one of several reportedly released by the terrorist group. Other videos have featured a speaker with a British accent and show the beheadings of American, English and French journalists and aid workers.
