A Jackson, Mississippi, homeowner opened fired on two intruders he found in his home early Friday morning and, according to police, it was the second such incident in about a week involving armed residents fighting back.

At about 2:30 a.m. the homeowner, who did not want to be identified, discovered two men inside his home.

“The homeowner confronted them. He shot one individual several times. The second one was able to escape through a window,” Jackson Assistant Police Chief Lee Vance told reporters.

19-year-old Jonquez Porter, who was shot multiple times, was pronounced dead at the scene. A short time later, officers found the second suspect, Romelo Porter, at a nearby home, suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg.

Porter will face charges once released from the hospital. However, it is improbable the homeowner will face any charges, as his actions are likely protected under the state’s Castle Doctrine law which allows the use of deadly force to defend one’s home.

“You’re entitled to have a weapon in your home and certainly you’re entitled to defend yourself and your home. Apparently, from all we know, this is what this homeowner did,” Vance said. “The deceased suffered the consequences that come sometimes when you break into somebody’s house.”

And authorities say this isn’t the only such incident to occur recently in the city either.

Last Thursday, another Jackson homeowner awakened at about 2 a.m. to three men in his bedroom. Although the homeowner, who did not want to be identified, kept a rifle next to his bed, the intruders were able to grab it before the man woke up.

The suspects hit the homeowner in the face with the butt of the gun and a physical altercation between the four men ensued. The homeowner was eventually able to wrestle his rifle from one of the suspects and opened fire, shooting two of the intruders.

One suspect wasn’t able to escape the scene, while the other two took off. The lone suspect was transported to a local hospital where his injuries were deemed to be life-threatening. However, about four hours after the break-in, authorities found the second suspect, suffering from a gunshot wound, hiding behind a vacant home across the street from the original break-in.

And again, Jackson Police Department spokeswoman Officer Colendula Green stated, “Right now, (the homeowner) hasn’t been charged. I’m quite sure it will fit under the Castle Doctrine.”
