West Virginia -(Ammoland.com)- Winter is a great time to camp, and with the recent warm weather in West Virginia, it’s an even better time.
Camp Creek State Park and Forest Supt. Frank Ratcliffe says winter camping provides a truer outdoor experience because there are fewer people and the wildlife is more visible, and he recommends Camp Creek’s four campgrounds.
“There are nearly 6,000 acres and more than 7 miles of streams to discover at Camp Creek,” Ratcliffe said. “We enjoy meeting our visitors and encouraging people to enjoy the outdoors.”
Located 2 miles off Interstate 77 at Exit 20, Camp Creek is a natural fit for outdoor enthusiasts. The four separate campground areas are Mash Fork, Blue Jay, a pack in/pack out site, and the Double C Horse and Rider. There are 39 campsites plus the horse and rider campground, and they are open year-round with discount rates in the winter.
Winter rates are $20 for full hookup, $17 for sites with water and electricity, $15 for electric sites and $10 for rustic sites. The shower house and check-in building are winterized so there is no water or electricity at these facilities in winter. The modern sites are set up with frost-free valves.
“Campers have to be mindful to winterize or protect their units from freezing. Folks that camp in winter generally come prepared,” Ratcliffe said.
